Around twenty-five thousand homes in south-east Queensland were left without power on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms passed over the state, producing strong winds hitting over 100 km/h.

Large Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Impact

Homeowners reported substantial frozen pellets reaching sizes of 7cm in particular locations. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that multiple regions across Queensland had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Utility workers were attempting to repair electricity service throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews activated to handle the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victoria's Storm Challenges

At the same time, nearly 1,000 households in Victoria also experienced electricity disruptions after Melbourne saw its wettest day in a year and a half.

State Emergency Services handled over five hundred calls for help across the state, primarily for property damage but also for collapsed vegetation and water accumulation.

• Werribee region - recorded significant weather impact
• Hoppers Crossing suburb - numerous emergency calls
• Wyndham region - over 175 calls for assistance

At the height on yesterday, more than 28,000 energy customers in the state were experiencing outages.

Climate Outlook

Moist weather were forecast to persist along much of the state's eastern regions this next several days as a weather pattern continued to draw in moisture against the shoreline.

Tuesday was forecast to be the wettest day, with continued storm activity expected across multiple regions of both states.

Safety Concern

Public health experts cautioned that there was an increased chance of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the state's northern country region, specifically given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This warning comes after historical occurrences where analogous circumstances led to significant health impacts in the region.
